Biography

Prof Nezamuddin Ahmad is a full time palliative care physician and a Professor of Palliative Medicine at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, the only medical university of his country. Specialized in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, was first exposed to the concept of palliative care in 2005 at the Institute of Palliative Medicine (IPM) in Kerala, India.

Prof Ahmad was instrumental in initiating palliative care services at the medical university in 2007 and in establishing the Centre for Palliative Care (CPC) in 2011 as the university organised the 2nd Public Health and Palliative Care Conference in Bangladesh. To take palliative care initiative outside the institutional territory into the community, CPC has been running a project in collaboration with the Worldwide Hospice Palliative Care Alliance in the largest slum of the country as well as two more satellite centres near the capital city. Prof Ahmad has also been influential in the University’s decision to recognize Palliative Medicine as a specialty in 2015.
